What is AEO, and why crypto projects need it now

More and more crypto users start their research with an AI assistant instead of a search engine: "What's the best L2 for gaming?", "Which DeFi protocols offer real yield?". If your project isn't part of those answers, you're invisible to a growing share of your market.

Answer-engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your project easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and cite.

How AEO differs from SEO

Classic SEO aims to rank a page in a list of ten links. AEO aims to be the answer, or one of the few sources an assistant cites. That changes what matters:

• Clarity over keywords. Assistants favour content that states facts plainly: what the project is, who it's for and how it works.
• Structure. Question-and-answer formats, clear headings and structured data help models pull out answers.
• Consistency across the web. Assistants compare sources. Your docs, site, X profile and third-party coverage should tell the same story.
• Authority. Mentions in reputable media, research and ecosystem directories raise the odds of being cited.

Five AEO quick wins for web3 teams

1. Write a plain-language "What is [project]?" page that answers the question in its first two sentences.
2. Add an FAQ section to your key pages, marked up with FAQ structured data.
3. Make your docs crawlable. Don't hide them behind JavaScript-only rendering or block AI crawlers.
4. Publish an llms.txt file that points AI systems to your most important pages.
5. Get listed in the ecosystem directories, comparison sites and research reports assistants already rely on.

Measuring it

Ask the major assistants the questions your users ask, every month, and track whether (and how) your project is mentioned. Tools for tracking AI visibility are maturing fast, but a simple manual log is a good start.
